This was a practice where the mother, often disguised or hiding, often under a spread, holds her baby tightly for the photographer to insure a sharply focused image.
This is so strange and creepy. I’m trying to think of a modern equivalent that people in a 100 years’ time will look back on as a bizarre antiquated habit.

Also note how the advent of digital photography means you can now take 50 shots of your kid looking as sour-faced and morose as most of the ones here do but just share that one smiling happy picture that makes your child look just the cutest and sweetest.
